The Khelo India Scheme, which started in 2016-17, aims to get more people involved in sports and help athletes reach their full potential. It focuses on promoting both participation and excellence in sports across the country. Initially, the scheme was given a budget of Rs. 1756 crore for the years 2017-2020. After that, it was extended for one year with a budget of Rs. 328.77 crore. Now, the scheme has been revised again and extended for five more years, from 2021 to 2026, with a total budget of Rs. 3790.50 crore.
In a statement to the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, shared the key achievements of the scheme. It has led to the creation of 323 new sports infrastructure projects, which have cost Rs. 3073.97 crore. The scheme has also set up 1041 Khelo India Centres (KICs), where children are trained in various sports, former athletes are supported, and grassroots sports facilities are improved.
Additionally, 32 Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs) have been established to offer top-quality training for athletes. Along with these, 301 sports academies have been accredited to provide further opportunities for sports development. The Khelo India facilities are open to everyone, ensuring that people from both rural and urban areas can take part and improve their skills.
Currently, 2781 athletes are benefiting from the scheme. They receive coaching, equipment, medical care, and a monthly allowance to help with their expenses. Through the Khelo India Scheme, the government is working with state governments to create more opportunities for sports development, ensuring that more people across the country have the chance to pursue their passion for sports and reach new heights.
