The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Shri Conrad Sangma says that the border dispute with Assam needs a multidimensional understanding. He said that the historical facts, documents and land records available with both the Assam and Meghalaya governments will play an important role in assessing the key areas disputed by both the parties.
Responding to a special motion on the Assam-Meghalaya border dispute, especially the recent border clashes at Longkhuli, Umlapar and other places in Meghalaya. While drawing the attention of the House, Sangma ji, mentioned that apart from land, documents and historical facts, the ethnic diversity and willingness of the people living in these border areas should also be relevant aspects of the discussion when trying to understand the long pending border issue.
In such a situation, both the states will have to settle the issue amicably with mutual consent and if it is not so, they can take recourse to the courts. Sangma also reiterated that there will be "no surrender" of the areas which the state has claimed, "and only those areas will be discussed with Assam on which the government agrees."
