Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of Naval Staff, and all personnel of the Indian Navy extend their heartfelt condolences to the grieving families of those who tragically lost their lives in the collision between the Navy craft and the passenger ferry Neel Kamal. The Navy also wishes a speedy and full recovery to those injured in the incident.
At approximately 1600 hours on 18 December, an Indian Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with the passenger ferry Neel Kamal off Karanja, Mumbai. The ferry was carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island and sustained significant damage.
Search and Rescue (SAR) operations were immediately launched by the Indian Navy, in coordination with the Coast Guard and Marine Police. Four helicopters, 11 naval craft, one Coast Guard boat, and three Marine Police boats were initially deployed to ensure the safe evacuation and rescue of all passengers and crew involved.
As of yesterday’s data, 99 survivors have been rescued and transferred to nearby jetties and hospitals for medical treatment. Tragically, the collision has resulted in the loss of 13 lives, including one Navy personnel and two representatives from the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) aboard the Navy craft for engine trials.
SAR efforts have continued through the night of 18–19 December 2024. Two individuals from the ferry craft are still reported missing. Eight Navy craft, a naval helicopter, and a Coast Guard vessel are actively engaged in locating the missing persons in the vicinity of the accident.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his grief over the incident and Maharashtra Chief Minister also extended his condolences and announced financial assistance for the victims’ families.
The Indian Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident and establish the facts of the case.
The Indian Navy remains committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected and ensuring safety at sea. Further updates will be shared as more information becomes available.
