The Indian Constituent Assembly formally adopted the Constitution on this day in 1949, which came into impact on January 26, 1950, confirming India as a sovereign, democratic republic. Since 2015, November 26 has been celebrated as Constitution Day or Samvidhan Divas, to celebrate this historic event. This year, the memorial celebrations will span a year, focusing on key themes such as the Preamble, understanding the Constitution, its making, and its ongoing legacy.

A grand event was held at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, attended by the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister, Lok Sabha Speaker, ministers, and other celebrities. The event started with the National Anthem, followed by a welcome speech from the Lok Sabha Speaker, who praised the vision and devotion of the Constitution's framers, particularly Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. He highlighted their commitment to protecting fundamental rights for all citizens. A short film was screened, showcasing the journey of the Constitution’s creation, the key contributions of leaders, and its role in shaping India’s democracy over the past 75 years, including important modifications and judicial milestones.

In his address, the Vice-President highlighted the Constitution’s continued applicability in shaping India’s democratic identity. He called for a commitment to both Fundamental Rights and Duties, encouraging citizens to prioritize national interests and unity over political divisions.

The President, in her speech, explained the Constitution as aliving and progressive documentthat has helped India to gain social justice and inclusive development. She also highlighted India’s growing role on the global stage as a supporter of peace and friendship, remembering the Constitution-makers’ vision for the nation.

During the event, several memorial releases were made, including a special coin and stamp dedicated to the 75th anniversary, and books titled Making of the Constitution of India: A Glimpse and Making of the Constitution of India & Its Glorious Journey. Also, versions of the Constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili were revealed, along with a booklet on the art of the Constitution. A highlight of the ceremony was the collective reading of the Preamble, led by the President, with citizens worldwide participating in a symbolic gesture of unity and shared responsibility.

This celebration of the Constitution’s 75th anniversary serves as a reminder of India’s determined commitment to democracy, justice, and equality. It supports the collective responsibility of all citizens to protect and promote these core values, providing that the Constitution remains a guiding force for the nation’s growth and unity in the years to come.
