Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted the need for India to improve its military capabilities to face growing security challenges. Speaking at an event celebrating 2024 as the Year of Naval Civilians, he pointed out the increasing global tensions and insisted on quick action to strengthen the country’s defense.
Shri Rajnath Singh explained that the last decade has been filled with uncertainty, with conflicts happening all over the world. “Given these challenges, we need strong planning and resources to keep our country safe,” he said. He also called for involving everyone in the defense planning process to tackle future challenges. He highlighted the key role civilians play in supporting the Armed Forces and the importance of working together.
The Raksha Mantri highlighted the expanding role of the military and the significant support from the civilian workforce, whom he called “soldiers without uniforms.” He encouraged civilians to adopt the same values of patriotism and discipline that military personnel do to help make India’s defense stronger.
Shri Rajnath Singh also talked about India’s important position in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and the government’s focus on strengthening the Navy. He mentioned the recent addition of three advanced warships—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—built in India. These ships represent India’s growing naval power and the success of collective efforts.
“Our prosperity depends on maritime security,” the Raksha Mantri said. He highlighted the importance of protecting India’s seas and ensuring safe transportation for ships. While other powerful countries have lowered their naval presence, India has stepped up its efforts in the region to prevent rising threats, especially in areas like the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
Cybersecurity also became a major topic of discussion, as Raksha Mantri pointed out the dangers of cyber attacks on national security. He recommended the Armed Forces focus more on cybersecurity awareness to safeguard India’s defense systems.
Shri Rajnath Singh promised the government’s support to all those serving the nation, both in uniform and in civilian roles. “No one should be left behind,” he said, explaining that the government aims to support both military and civilian workers equally. He highlighted the introduction of an Insurance Scheme for employees to provide financial security to them and their families.
Looking ahead to the goal of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047, the Raksha Mantri encouraged civilians to stay updated with technology and improve their skills. He expressed confidence that by working together, India will overcome future challenges and become a developed nation.
He highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving the nation’s goals, saying, “Everyone, no matter their role, should work for the greater good of the country.” He also called for a broader approach that includes the participation of all people in India’s growth and security.
The event was attended by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and other dignitaries. Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, the Chief of the Naval Staff, also spoke, praising the crucial support of Naval Civilians in keeping the Navy ready for action.
The event featured an exhibition showcasing the artistic talents of Naval Civilians, along with a special ceremony where Raksha Mantri presented Prime Minister’s Shram Awards to those who had made significant contributions to their work. He also gave out meritorious and cash awards to 25 outstanding Naval Civilians for their dedication.
A special song dedicated to Naval Civilians was performed live, honoring their hard work and resilience. The event ended with a sense of pride and appreciation for the invaluable contributions of civilians in supporting the Indian Navy. (PR)
