During his visit to the Siang and Upper Siang districts, Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein spoke to the people about the importance of the Upper Siang Multipurpose Project. He explained how this project is essential, especially in light of China’s massive hydroelectric dam on the Yarlung Tsangpo River, which could significantly affect India and Bangladesh.
Mein shared concerns raised by experts about the potential dangers of China’s dam. He warned that if China diverts water from the Yarlung Tsangpo, it could lead to the drying up of the Siang River and its tributaries. This would harm aquatic life and negatively impact millions of people in Assam and Bangladesh who rely on the Brahmaputra River for farming. Moreover, he pointed out that if political tensions rise, China could release an excessive amount of water from its dam, leading to severe flooding in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, causing loss of lives and property.
To tackle these risks, the Indian government has proposed the Upper Siang Multipurpose Project. This project, apart from generating 11,000 MW of electricity, aims to regulate the river’s water flow, prevent flooding, and ensure water availability during dry seasons. Mein clarified that electricity generation is a secondary benefit; the main focus is to manage water resources efficiently and safeguard people from extreme weather conditions.
He urged educated individuals and community leaders to inform the villagers about the advantages of this project. He also called on those opposing it to engage in discussions rather than outright rejection, assuring them that the government would not force the project upon them. He promised fair compensation and proper rehabilitation for those affected, including well-planned model villages with essential services, double-lane roads along both sides of the Siang River, hospitals, and educational institutions.
Furthermore, Mein informed the public that a special committee has been set up to address their concerns and ensure transparent discussions. He encouraged people to look at the long-term economic and social benefits the project would bring to the region and the state as a whole.
The Deputy Chief Minister shared these insights while speaking at a public meeting in Adi-Pasi Village during the inauguration of the Mirem Batum Lingkang War Memorial and later at a gathering with villagers in Simong Village, Upper Siang District. (PR)
