Assam Rifles, India's oldest paramilitary force, proudly celebrated its 190th Raising Day at its headquarters in Shillong. This event marked nearly 200 years of service, bravery, and dedication to protecting the country.
Lt Gen Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of Assam Rifles, led the tribute at the War Memorial in Shillong, honoring soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation. He praised the force for its tireless efforts in maintaining security in the Northeast and Kashmir, emphasizing its important role in protecting India’s borders.
One of the key moments of the event was the presentation of the DGAR Banner for 2023-24 to the best-performing units. 36 Assam Rifles secured third place, 3 Assam Rifles took second place, and 4 Assam Rifles won the top honor. These awards recognized their outstanding dedication and hard work in keeping the region safe.
The Assam Rifles continued to excel in 2024-25. Over the past year, four of its battalions received the Chief of the Army Staff Unit Citation, while six battalions were honored with the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Unit Citation. Additionally, the force’s personnel received one Shaurya Chakra, eight Sena Medals, and 400 Presidential and Governor’s Medals for their bravery and service.
Apart from their security operations, Assam Rifles personnel also shone in sports, winning 254 medals at the national level and 21 medals in international competitions during 2024-25.
To stay prepared for future challenges, Assam Rifles is constantly upgrading its equipment, including modern weapons, surveillance tools, and protective gear. As the Northeast develops and prospers, the force remains a key source of security, bringing stability and confidence to local communities.
With its strong commitment to its motto, ‘Sentinels of the North East,’ Assam Rifles continues to adapt to new challenges while upholding its proud legacy of service and dedication. (PR)
