The 5th Battalion of the Rajput Regiment, one of the oldest and most respected units of the Indian Army, recently celebrated its 200th anniversary with great pride and enthusiasm. The event took place at Delhi Cantonment, where a special Commemorative Postal Stamp was unveiled by General (Dr) Vijay Kumar Singh, PVSM, AVSM, YSM (Retd), former Chief of Army Staff and the current Honourable Governor of Mizoram.

The 5th Battalion was established in 1825 in Kanpur and is among the few military units in India that have served continuously for two centuries. Over the years, the battalion has played a crucial role in various military operations before and after India’s independence. In recognition of its dedication and exceptional service, it has received four consecutive citations in recent years.

As part of the bicentenary celebrations, several events were organized, including a special tribute by veterans at war memorials in Jammu and Kashmir. The unveiling of the commemorative stamp was attended by serving officers, veterans, and representatives from the Additional Directorate General of Army Postal Service (ADG APS). During the event, General V.K. Singh praised the battalion’s contributions and wished them continued success.

A significant highlight of the celebrations was a ceremony at the Cariappa Parade Ground, where Lieutenant General M.K. Katiyar, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Command, presented new Colours to the battalion. These Colours are a replica of the ones already held by the unit and represent its rich history and tradition of bravery. Lt Gen Katiyar also met with veterans, acknowledging their valuable role in shaping the battalion into one of the most distinguished infantry formations of the Indian Army.

The bicentenary celebrations emphasized the battalion’s unwavering dedication to duty, a legacy that continues to inspire the current generation of soldiers. The event was a proud moment for everyone associated with the battalion and reinforced the strong sense of unity and commitment that defines "Prachand Paanch. (PR)
