The Indian Army has started the ‘Major Bob Khating Football Tournament’ in Senapati District, Manipur, to encourage sports and fitness among the local community. The tournament takes place from 10 to 15 January 2025 at the Turf Football Ground.
This event honors the memory of Major Ralengnao Bob Khating, a celebrated soldier and civil servant from Manipur. Born on 28 February 1912 in Ukhrul. He played an important role in bringing Tawang into the Indian Union for his contributions, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 1957.
A total of 16 teams from Senapati and nearby areas are competing in the tournament, which follows an elimination format. The first three days feature league matches, followed by the quarterfinals on 13 January, the semifinals on 14 January and the final match on 15 January. The closing ceremony will also take place on 15 January.
The tournament had already started with an opening ceremony on 10 January attended by local leaders, Army officials and passionate spectators. Highlights of the event included a Tangkhul Cultural Dance performance and a Football Skills Show by children from the Hills Academy of Football.
This initiative is part of Operation Sadbhavana and aims to bring people together, promote sportsmanship and encourage fitness among the youth of the region. The Indian Army hopes this tournament will inspire young people and strengthen the bond between the Army and the local community.
The ‘Major Bob Khating Football Tournament’ is not only a sports event but also a way to honor an inspiring formation from Manipur to promote peace and development in the area. (PR)
