The Prime Minister's Wi-Fi Access Network Interface (PM-WANI) framework continues to improve digital connectivity across India, with a special focus on expanding internet access in remote and underserved regions. As of November 21, 2024, a total of 246,993 PM-WANI hotspots have been installed nationwide, according to data provided by the Ministry of Communications.
In the North-Eastern region, a total of 1,682 PM-WANI hotspots have been deployed, spread across six states:
- Arunachal Pradesh: 1,017 hotspots
- Manipur: 19 hotspots
- Meghalaya: 256 hotspots
- Mizoram: 3 hotspots
- Nagaland: 78 hotspots
- Tripura: 309 hotspots
The PM-WANI scheme, part of the government's broader push for a digitally connected India, enables Public Data Office Aggregators (PDOAs) to provide internet services through their Public Data Offices (PDOs). These PDOAs work based on commercial and technological considerations, catering to local demands and expanding access to high-speed internet.
The National Digital Communications Policy, 2018, had set an ambitious target of deploying 10 million public Wi-Fi hotspots by 2022. While this target remains unmet, the steady improvement under the PM-WANI framework has significantly boosted connectivity, especially in remote areas like the North-East.
The statement was conveyed by Dr. Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, Minister of State for Communications yesterday, in a written reply during the Lok Sabha session. The expansion of PM-WANI hotspots in the North-East emphasizes the government's promise to bridge the digital divide and empower citizens through greater access to internet services.
With the framework gaining traction, it is expected to enhance economic development, educational opportunities, and digital inclusion in these regions. (PR)
