The ongoing trend of political realignment in Nagaland has taken a significant turn as 15 prominent leaders from the National People’s Party (NPP), led by General Secretary (Organization) L. Hiketo Shohe, officially joined the Indian National Congress (INC) on Monday. This development is expected to reshape the political dynamics in the state ahead of future elections.

Congress Party Welcomes NPP Leaders

The announcement was made during a press conference at Congress Bhawan, with Supongmeren, Member of Parliament from Nagaland, and Khriedi Theünuo, Working President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), addressing the media. Supongmeren described this as a "turning point" for the Congress Party, emphasizing that it would help revive the party's relevance in the state.

Supongmeren’s Optimistic Outlook

Supongmeren expressed optimism about the future, highlighting the strategic inclusion of both young and experienced leaders like L. Hiketo Shohe and his team. He said this would greatly strengthen the Congress Party, especially as it works to rebuild its foundation in Nagaland through collaboration and progress.

Khriedi Theünuo’s Support for New Members

Khriedi Theünuo welcomed the new entrants to the Congress, noting that their decision to join the party reflected the growing support for its policies and programs. He particularly credited the leadership of Rahul Gandhi for guiding the party’s efforts, calling this shift a step toward revitalizing Congress' presence in Nagaland.

L. Hiketo Shohe’s Reasons for Joining Congress

Speaking at the event, L. Hiketo Shohe explained that his decision to join the Congress Party was motivated by his desire to bring justice and development to the people of Nagaland. He praised the Congress Party’s vision and leadership, highlighting Rahul Gandhi’s proactive approach to issues in the Northeast, such as the Bharat Jodo Yatra.

Contrast with BJP’s Leadership

Shohe also compared this approach to what he described as the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi during crises, such as the unrest in Manipur. He called for political leaders who truly represent the interests of the people in Parliament.

Challenges and Opportunities for Congress in Nagaland

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the Congress Party in Nagaland, particularly its lack of elected legislative members, Shohe framed these obstacles as opportunities to strengthen the party from the grassroots level. He expressed confidence about the upcoming general elections and vowed to work closely with MP Supongmeren, whom he praised as humble and dynamic.

A Call for Youth Participation

Shohe urged young, educated, and motivated individuals to join the Congress Party platform, emphasizing the need for a shift in Nagaland’s political paradigm. He expressed hope that this move would mark the beginning of a new chapter for the Congress Party, driven by teamwork, dedication, and the support of the people.

Looking Ahead to 2024 Elections

As the political landscape in Nagaland evolves, the Congress Party appears poised for a renewed push in the upcoming elections, with the addition of these influential new members seen as a key part of their strategy.
