In a main step toward restoring peace in Manipur, leaders from the Zomi and Kuki communities voluntarily offered a substantial number of illegal and robbed weapons. This action came in response to a request by Ajay Kumar Bhalla the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur.
On February 20, 2025, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla called upon all communities to hand over unauthorized arms within seven days, warning of strict action against those who failed to comply. Following this appeal, Assam Rifles, along with Manipur Police, CRPF, State Intelligence Agencies and the State Administration, held discussions with community leaders. These meetings managed security problems and showed the advantages of a weapon-free region.
The discussions proved successful, as the leaders agreed to cooperate with the Central Government. On February 22, 2025, in Tuibong Village, Churachandpur District, the first batch of surrendered weapons was officially handed over in the presence of the senior officials from Assam Rifles, CRPF, the State Civil Administration, Police and State Intelligence Agencies.
The surrendered arms included 16 different types of weapons, such as an M-16 rifle, a 7.62 mm SLR, two AK rifles, three INSAS rifles, two M-79 40mm Under Barrel Grenade Launchers (UBGL), a 9mm carbine machine gun, a 51 mm mortar, three .303 rifles, and two single-barrel rifles. Along with these, 64 gelatine sticks, 10 rounds of 60 mm Pumpi (improvised mortar) ammunition, 17 rounds of AK ammunition, 40 rounds of 5.56 mm rifle ammunition and three 9 mm caliber rounds were also handed over.
Authorities believe this voluntary surrender of weapons will encourage more communities to follow suit. The joint security forces—including Assam Rifles, Police, State Civil Administration, CRPF, and State Intelligence Agencies—have planned a systematic approach to persuade other groups to give up their arms. This initiative aims to inspire the youth to choose peace and contribute to the progress of Manipur.
Officials are optimistic that this positive step will help reduce ongoing conflicts and create a peaceful environment in the region. (PR)
