Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth commissioning INS Nirdeshak, a new survey ship, at a ceremony carried by the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam today. The event was hosted by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, and followed by senior Navy officers, agents from Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), and other dignitaries.
Nirdeshak is the second ship in the Survey Vessel (Large) Project and has been built by GRSE in Kolkata. Over 80% of the ship’s components were made in India, reflecting the country’s motivation for self-reliance (Aatmanirbharta) in defense production. The project showcases the skills of the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau, with major contributions from Indian industries, including MSMEs, SAIL, and private partners.
This new ship is a modern version of the previous Nirdeshak, which helped the Navy for 32 years before being retired in 2014. The latest version is designed with advanced technology, allowing it to remain at sea for up to 25 days and reach speeds of over 18 knots.
The commissioning of Nirdeshak is an essential step in upgrading the Navy’s hydrographic fleet, which is responsible for mapping the sea floor and providing safe navigation. It also supports India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) concept, highlighting maritime security and regional cooperation.
