The 4th edition of the India-Malaysia joint military exercise Harimau Shakti started today on 2nd December 2024 at Bentong Camp in Pahang district, Malaysia. The exercise, scheduled from December 2 to December 15, 2024, seeks to boost military cooperation and enhance joint capabilities between the two nations.
This year's training features 78 personnel from the Indian Army's Mahar Regiment and 123 personnel from the Royal Malaysian Regiment. Harimau Shakti is an annual affair conducted alternately in India and Malaysia, with the previous edition held in November 2023 at Umroi Cantonment, Meghalaya, India.
The exercise is developed to enhance the operational readiness of both armies, focusing on counter-insurgency operations in jungle terrain under the United Nations Chapter VII mandate. It will unfold in two phases:
- Phase 1: The initial phase will involve cross-training sessions, including lectures, demonstrations, and practice drills to navigate jungle topography effectively.
- Phase 2: In the final phase, troops from both sides will participate in a simulated training featuring joint operations. Scenarios include anti-military threat ambushes, reconnaissance patrols, occupation of ports, and coordinated raids on terrorist-occupied areas.
The training is expected to facilitate the exchange of best practices and improve interoperability between the Indian and Malaysian armed forces. It will also boost defence cooperation, promoting camaraderie and deepening bilateral ties between the two countries.
By aligning their military tactics and operational methodologies, Harimau Shakti allows both nations to contribute to regional security and mutual growth. (PR)
