Bentong (Malaysia), The 4th edition of the India-Malaysia Joint Military Exercise, HARIMAU SHAKTI, officially commenced today at the Bentong Camp in the Pahang district of Malaysia. The exercise is scheduled to run from December 2nd to 15th, 2024.
Participating Contingents
The Indian contingent, consisting of 78 personnel, is represented by a Battalion from the MAHAR Regiment. Meanwhile, the Malaysian contingent includes 123 personnel from The Royal Malaysian Regiment. This annual military training event alternates between India and Malaysia. The previous edition was held in November 2023 at Umroi Cantonment in Meghalaya, India.
Objective of HARIMAU SHAKTI
The primary aim of the joint exercise is to improve the joint military capabilities of both nations, particularly in counter-insurgency operations in jungle terrain. The exercise is conducted under the framework of Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate. This year’s focus is on enhancing operational readiness in challenging jungle environments.
Two-Phase Exercise
The exercise will unfold in two phases. The first phase will concentrate on cross-training between the two armies, including lectures, demonstrations, and practice drills tailored for jungle terrain. The second phase will involve a simulated exercise where both forces will engage in various drills such as Anti-MT Ambush, Occupation of Harbour, Reconnaissance Patrol, Ambush, and the recapture of areas taken over by terrorists.
Enhanced Cooperation and Camaraderie
HARIMAU SHAKTI will foster increased interoperability between the two armies, allowing them to share best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for joint operations. The exercise aims to strengthen the bond between the forces, promoting bonhomie and camaraderie. Furthermore, it will bolster defence cooperation and contribute to the ongoing strengthening of bilateral relations between India and Malaysia.
