AFSPA Repeal and protests continue in Nagaland, which is still mourning the killing of 14 civilians in an insurgent retaliatory operation by the Indian Army in Mon district Nagaland. After thorough observation into the case, the central government has extended the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for another six months in Nagaland effectively from 30 December 2021.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, who has been vocal about the controversial AFSPA law, expressed hope that the Northeast may see the controversial law coming to an end. He mentioned that even if there is an extension of six months in Nagaland, it can still be revoked. Conrad K Sangma has also declared that the demand to withdraw the controversial law Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act or AFSPA will be his party's major agenda in the upcoming Manipur Assembly elections.
AFSPA is in force in parts of Nagaland, Assam, Manipur (except seven assembly constituencies in Imphal) and Arunachal Pradesh. AFSPA act was withdrawn from Meghalaya in 2018.
The NPP is a major participant in the 60-member BJP-led coalition government in Manipur, the party has two ministers in the government, including a deputy chief minister. The NPP party plans to contest the Manipur elections alone in the upcoming assembly elections.
