Amid dense forests and steep ridgelines of Basantgarh in Jammu & Kashmir’s Udhampur district, a fierce gunbattle broke out today as security forces launched a high-risk counter-terror operation, codenamed #OpBirliGali. The joint mission, led by the Indian Army’s White Knight Corps and Jammu & Kashmir Police, was based on precise intelligence reports of terrorist movement in the region.
As troops closed in on the suspected hideouts, contact was swiftly established with the militants, leading to a heavy exchange of fire. In the opening moments of the encounter, one Indian Army soldier was critically injured. He was immediately airlifted and provided emergency medical treatment, but tragically, he succumbed to his injuries. His name is expected to be released after the family is informed.
The soldier’s sacrifice has deeply shaken yet further steeled the resolve of his comrades. He went down fighting, doing what he loved protecting the country, said a senior officer involved in the operation.
Even as the firefight rages on, the joint forces remain committed to flushing out the remaining terrorists. The terrain is unforgiving — thick forests, treacherous slopes, and unpredictable weather make movement difficult but morale remains sky-high. This is tough ground, a jawan shared, but we’re tougher when it comes to defending our land.
The ongoing operation once again throws light on the unyielding courage of our forces in Jammu & Kashmir, who operate day in and day out in life-threatening conditions to maintain peace and security.
As the nation waits for more updates, one thing remains clear the spirit of the Indian soldier stands tall, unbroken, and proud.
