The Indian Army successfully concluded a challenging 251-kilometer cycling expedition today, marking the 62nd Walong Day celebrations with a spirit of adventure and remembrance. The expedition, which spanned three days, was flagged in at the Namti War Memorial, bringing together military personnel, government officials, and local communities.
The cycling event, organized in collaboration with the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO), saw participants traverse the picturesque yet rugged landscapes of the Lohit Valley. The route covered three border districts: Namsai, Lohit, and Anjaw.
Flag-off and Participation
The adventure began on 21 October 2024, with the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh, Shri Chowna Mein, flagging off the event at the Golden Pagoda in Namsai. The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Indian Army, the state government, and NEEPCO, alongside a crowd of 750 enthusiastic locals. A total of 62 cyclists participated, including soldiers from the Indian Army, adventurers from Pune, and local cycling enthusiasts.
The Journey
Over three days, the expedition covered diverse and challenging terrain. The cyclists journeyed through the Kamlang Nagar Tiger Reserve, Wakro, and Parshuram Kund, all while navigating alongside the pristine Lohit River. The team engaged with local communities, especially in Hayuliang, promoting adventure tourism and highlighting the importance of health and fitness. The cyclists also passed through the historic village of Walong, a site of strategic importance during the 1962 Sino-Indian War.
Commemorating Heroes
The expedition’s conclusion at Namti was marked by a solemn flagging-in ceremony at the Namti War Memorial, where participants honored the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the defense of the nation during the Indo-China War of 1962. The cycling expedition was not only a celebration of adventure and fitness but also a tribute to the legacy of those who fought for India's sovereignty.
The Indian Army’s initiative underscores its commitment to promoting tourism in the border regions of Arunachal Pradesh, fostering a sense of patriotism and adventure while strengthening the bond between the military and local communities. (PR)
