On October 14, 2024, the Indian Navy celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of the first ship, 'Samarthak,' from a two-vessel Multi-Purpose Vessel project at L&T's Kattupalli Shipyard in Chennai. The ceremony was graced by Mrs. Shashi Tripathi, President of the Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA), who performed the traditional ship-launching ceremony. Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, presided over the event.
The name 'Samarthak,' meaning 'Supporter,' reflects the vessel's envisioned multi-dimensional operational capabilities. These Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs) are designed to enhance the Indian Navy's operational flexibility and efficiency, showcasing India's commitment to indigenous shipbuilding.
The contract for the construction of the two MPVs was signed between the Ministry of Defence and L&T Shipyard on March 25, 2022. The vessels will serve a variety of functions, including towing ships, launching and recovering targets, operating uncrewed autonomous vehicles, and acting as trial platforms for various indigenous weapons and sensors currently under development. Each vessel measures 106 meters in length and 16.8 meters in width, capable of achieving a maximum speed of 15 knots.
This launch marks a significant step forward in the Indian Navy's ongoing efforts to strengthen its capabilities through domestic shipbuilding initiatives. It aligns with the Government of India's vision for 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) and the 'Make in India' initiative, reinforcing the importance of self-sufficiency in defense manufacturing.
The launch of 'Samarthak' stands as a testament to the growing partnership between the Indian Navy and private shipyards, signaling a bright future for India's maritime defense capabilities.(PR)
